Manpower Employment Outlook Survey Predicts a Strong Hiring Climate in Canada for the Third Quarter of 2007

TORONTO, Jun 12, 2007 (Canada NewsWire via COMTEX News Network) -- Canadian employers expect a solid hiring climate for the July to September period of 2007 according to the latest results of the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey, the most extensive, forward-looking employment survey in the world.

The survey of more than 1,700 Canadian employers reveals that 33 per cent plan to increase their payrolls in the next three months while five per cent anticipate cutbacks for a Net Employment Outlook of 28 per cent. Of those polled, 59 per cent expect no changes and three per cent are unsure of their staffing intentions in the upcoming quarter.

"This quarter's Net Employment Outlook indicates that the active hiring activity seen in the previous quarter will continue," said Lori Rogers, VP of Operations for Manpower Canada. "Employers are telling us that over the next three months they will continue to add to their payrolls at a rate similar to the preceding period. In fact, results show one in three employers expect to add new employees in the quarter ahead."

"The positive hiring outlooks in Western and Atlantic Canada are being bolstered by the strong hiring expectations reported by Construction employers," Rogers adds. "Employers in Western Canada report a bright hiring climate with a Net Employment Outlook of 36 per cent, as do Atlantic Canada employers at 33 per cent. Ontario and Quebec employers expect healthy hiring climates as well, with both regions projecting a strong Net Employment Outlooks of 23 per cent."

Of the 10 surveyed industry sectors, Construction employers report the most active results for the quarter with a Net Employment Outlook of 31 per cent once seasonal variations are removed. Employers in the Mining and Education sectors also anticipate an optimistic quarter with respective Net Employment Outlooks of 28 per cent and 24 per cent.

Construction

Employers in the Construction sector expect a bright hiring climate with a seasonally adjusted Net Employment Outlook of 31 per cent. This is an increase from the previous quarter, when the Net Employment Outlook was 29 per cent, and is also a strong increase of 14 percentage points compared to this time last year.

Education

Education sector employers predict a solid quarter with a seasonally adjusted Net Employment Outlook of 24 per cent. Hiring expectations improved by 11 percentage points from the previous quarter and increased by four percentage points compared to this same time last year.

Finance, Insurance & Real Estate

Employers in the Finance, Insurance & Real Estate sector project an active hiring climate with a seasonally adjusted Net Employment Outlook of 20  per cent. This Net Employment Outlook is a two percentage point increase from the previous quarter and a decrease of two percentage points compared to this time last year.

Manufacturing - Durable Goods

A moderate three-month period is anticipated by employers in the Manufacturing - Durable Goods sector, where a Net Employment Outlook of nine  per cent is reported, once seasonal variations are removed. This Net Employment Outlook is a two percentage point increase from the previous quarter and is a decrease from this time last year when the Net Employment Outlook was 13 per cent.

Manufacturing - Non-Durable Goods

Employers in the Manufacturing - Non-Durable Goods sector predict a steady hiring climate with a seasonally adjusted Net Employment Outlook of 11  per cent. Hiring expectations remain unchanged from the previous quarter and increased by one percentage point compared to this time last year.

Mining

Employers in the Mining sector anticipate a solid quarter with a Net Employment Outlook of 28 per cent after seasonal variations are removed. Hiring plans in the Mining sector fell by five percentage points from the previous quarter and remained consistent with the Net Employment Outlook of last year at this time.

Public Administration

Public Administration sector employers predict an active hiring climate with a Net Employment Outlook of 21 per cent. Hiring expectations decreased by five percentage points from the previous quarter and decreased by two  percentage points compared to this same time last year.

Services

Employers in the Services sector expect a steady hiring climate for the upcoming quarter with a seasonally adjusted Net Employment Outlook of 17 per cent. This is a decrease of three percentage points from the previous quarter when the Net Employment Outlook was 20 per cent and a decrease of eight percentage points from this time last year.

Transportation & Public Utilities

Employers in the Transportation & Public Utilities sector predict a positive outlook with a seasonally adjusted Net Employment Outlook of 15 per cent. Hiring expectations decreased by seven percentage points from the previous quarter and decreased by six percentage points from last year at this time when the Net Employment Outlook was 21 per cent.

Wholesale & Retail Trades

Employers in the Wholesale & Retail Trade sector project an optimistic staffing picture for the third quarter of 2007 with a Net Employment Outlook of 20 per cent. Results for the sector increased from last quarter by four  percentage points and decreased by three percentage points compared to this time last year when the Net Employment Outlook was 23 per cent.
